Running a business is hard enough without dropping everything for a pest problem.
What if pest prevention was simple enough to be part of your daily routine instead of an interruption?
We all dread the moment when a normal is interrupted by a pest problem. Even if it only takes an hour to head to the store and back for traps, that’s a big bite out of the time you need to operate your business–not to mention time lost if the health inspector gets involved.
But pest control doesn’t have to bring business to a grinding halt. You can stay ahead of infestations by adding these seven routines to your workday. They’re all simple and straightforward, and are guaranteed to reduce the likelihood of pest interruptions.
1. Clean All Food Waste
It can take just one drop of cola on the floor overnight to trigger a pest problem, so don’t let any food waste go uncleaned. Wipe down all prep and serving surfaces, wash all dishes and clean all floors. This is our first tip because it’s normally the most effective way to prevent pest problems.
2. Prevent Moisture Buildup
Just like food, water left unattended becomes attractive to pests. Some are just thirsty, while others thrive in moist environments. Clean up spills when they happen, and ventilate areas that have experienced water damage or are prone to moisture accumulation.
3) Prioritize the Restroom
It’s not everyone’s favorite job, but a clean restroom is as important as a clean kitchen in the battle against pests. Make sure trash is emptied regularly and all surfaces are cleaned. Standing water or excess moisture should be treated quickly.
4) Care for Your Waste Containers
You can wipe down every surface and still end up with a pest problem if the paper towel you throw away goes into a worn out trash can. Be sure your trash receptacles are clean, free of damage and able to close tight. And if you have a leaky dumpster, ask waste management to repair or replace it.
5) Seal all Access Points
A small crack in the wall may seem unimportant, but it may also be an inviting entrance for ants and other tiny pests. Assume every crack or hole could be a problem and seal them fast. Better a couple dollars in spackle than the cost of an infestation.
6) Secure the Perimeter
A spotless interior might still encounter pests if the outside of your business isn’t tidy. Clearing brush and debris along the perimeter not only eliminates living spaces for pests, it takes away the cover they need to burrow through walls and sneak inside.
7) Craft a Cleaning Schedule
A cleaning schedule lets your staff know what needs to be done and when. We recommend cleaning work surfaces at the end of each shift, and visual inspections of the bathroom, trash cans and perimeter every hour. Be sure to clean as you encounter messes, and perform a total wipe-down at the end of the day.
